Exploring Oblivion in the Contemporary Art Scene

Art historian and jewellery maker Charlotte Vanhoubroeck (1991) brings gradually fading heritage back to life in the contemporary art scene. A silenced portrait, a wandering memory or a peculiar archival document impel her to explore oblivion. By using history as a tool, she creates jewellery that makes the incomprehensible forever tangible again.

Currently, as part of a doctoral research at PXL-MAD School of Arts, UHasselt (Belgium), Vanhoubroeck has been investigating the lost sentimental jewellery of Belgian queen Louise-Marie d'Orléans. By means of both artistic and art historical research, she is reactivating Louise’s jewellery from a contemporary point of view. In this way, the award-winning ‘Stilled Sentiments’ collection is reintroducing this almost forgotten queen to the public.
